Maynooth Post Primary Green Schools

This year Maynooth Education Campus is engaging with WorldWise Global Schools (WWGS), which was established in 2013. Since then, the programme has worked with 350 schools nationwide, in pursuit of their aim to integrate Global Citizenship Education into all aspects of teaching and learning at post-primary level. They do this by providing a comprehensive range of supports and interventions for schools — including grant funding, training, events, resources and personalised support from their staff team.

Global Citizenship Education (GCE) is a powerful vehicle through which we can better understand the world we live in, and take action to change it as informed global citizens. It equips both educators and learners with the knowledge, skills and values to act ethically and sustainably in a world that is both complex and highly interconnected. This year in Maynooth we hope to achieve the Bronze Global Passport Award, with a number of events and initiatives running in the school.

Kildare County Council – Maynooth Decarbonising Zone

The All of Government Climate Action Plan, 2019 sets out an ambitious whole-of-society approach designed to enable Ireland to meet its EU targets of reducing carbon emissions by 50% by 2030, on the journey to achieve net zero by 2050. A Decarbonising Zone (DZ) is a spatial area in which a range of climate mitigation, adaptation, and biodiversity measures along with action are identified to address local greenhouse gas emissions and climate needs to contribute to national climate action targets. All local authorities were obliged to nominate a town as a DZ within their boundaries and Maynooth was viewed as an ideal choice due to there being an existing Active Travel Plan for cycling and walking in place, potential for green infrastructure, good public transport routes along with the presence of a University (MU) in the town.

The Kildare County Council Climate Action Plan 2024-2029 which was adopted by Elected Members on the 18th December 2023 contains a Chapter outlining the vision and mission for Maynooth along with 48 actions which will contribute to reducing our emissions. The actions contained in the DZ Chapter are more ambitious and targeted than the county wide actions as the DZ is seen as a test bed where successful actions will be rolled out in other ‘Fast Follower’ towns in the County.

Maynooth Tidy Towns

The history of Tidy Towns in Maynooth goes back many years. Small groups of volunteers kept it going and progressing to the point where, in 2013, Maynooth gained its first national award: a Bronze medal.

To date, we have received 7 Gold Medals to add to the Bronze. In January 2024, Maynooth came top in the IBAL( Irish Business Against Litter) survey.

As the population of Maynooth increased, so too has the number of volunteers. We always welcome and appreciate new members. Ours is a diverse, international group and we are fortunate that many permanent and short-term residents choose to volunteer, creating a real sense of community.

The primary focus of Tidy Towns is to encourage communities to improve their local environment. Here in Maynooth, our initiatives and activities are undertaken with an awareness and appreciation of biodiversity and sustainability. We support all initiatives that aim to alleviate litter and waste.

We appreciate the support given by the local educational community, from Primary to Third Level, the businesses and individuals in Maynooth who help us achieve our goals. Expressions of thanks and words of encouragement are more important than any awards received.

Maynooth Town SEC

Maynooth Town SEC was formed in 2018 as part of the SEAI Sustainable Energy Community initiative. Since then, the group completed the Energy Master Plan for the town and played a significant role in the planning and community engagement for the Maynooth Decarbonising Zone plan. Twenty-seven community and education groups came together in Maynooth to support our selection as Maynooth’s Decarbonising Zone.

Our Energy Master Plan identified an ageing housing stock with up to 6,000 homes requiring retrofit to meet our climate action targets, and a very significant untapped solar energy generation capacity through the large area of roof space in our schools, university, community buildings and businesses.

The projects being designed in 2024 aim to take full advantage of this large untapped solar generation potential to build a sustainable energy network for the town to allow Energy Microgenerators store and receive payment for energy produced.

The Maynooth Sustainable Energy Community (SEC) is also collaborating with Maynooth University, MU Green Campus, and SEC groups in Clane and Kilcock to work as a North Kildare Energy Group to bring more resources and skills together to drive ambitious decarbonising projects.
